Flowerland

By Eggert Petursson

Eggert Petursson’s paintings of Icelandic flora have earned him the reputation as one of the leading contemporary artists of Scandinavia. His art has been marked by his deep interest in botany and an obsession with hoarding typifies much of his work, driven by a longing to discover, analyze and comprehend. He selects little pieces of nature, and presents them to the observer in the form of paintings that focus on the unique and the universal. FLOWERLAND displays his most recent work and is published in connection with an exhibition of his work in Nordatlantens Brygge in Copenhagen.

Eggert Pétursson was born in Reykjavík in 1956. Since graduating from the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht in the Netherlands in 1981 he has worked in a variety of media, including book art, paintings and installations. In 1989 Pétursson showed for the first time oil paintings on themes from the plant kingdom and attracted attention for the aesthetics of the works, which were unvarying repetitions of sections of vegetation.
